Dave Robinson and another National Championship Win

LVRC National Road Race Championship 2017 Promoted by GS Europa 25th June 2017

Grimsby based Flex-tech Ettridge Cycles Racing team is celebrating a win by their New Waltham-based rider Dave Robinson who took the title on Sunday afternoon.

The event was the LVRC Category E championship and brings together the best riders in the category from around the Uk. This year’s event was held at Owselbury on the South Downs of Hampshire.

Covering a race distance of 54 miles but including 5000 feet and leg sapping hill climbing the event was set to be a very tough test for all competitors

A full field of 45 riders departed the start line on Sunday morning including many ex-professional riders, the pre-race favourites included Jim Moffatt (Luton CC) and Martin Hulbert (VCM) both riders have been in very good form this year.

The circuit of just of 8 miles included 7 accents of three very steep hills all three coming together in quick succession. For the first three laps, many riders including the pre-event favourites attempted to breakaway but all were brought back by the peloton, who were determined to prevent the pre-race favourites escaping.

As the riders reached the hill section on lap 3 having just brought back a strong breakaway Dave felt that this would be a good time to make a move as one of the favourites jumped away Dave caught him and powering up the first of the three hills this put everyone in the bunch under pressure this started to line everyone out.

As Dave crested the top of the third hill he had established a small break of around 150 meters those in the bunch felt that this would easily be brought back. As the race again reached the hilly section Dave had managed to maintain his advantage and once again make a very determined attack on the hillier section of the lap. This attack was to be the decisive one and the gap to the bunch increased significantly. The peloton was now out of sight but not out of mind with two laps and 6 hills to get over before the end Dave had no idea if he was pulling away or worst being caught slowly, he was now fully committed and with no “plan B” the only course of action and just maintain a full effort for as long as possible.

As Dave started the final lap there was still no information to let him know what his advantage was but he could be sure at this stage the bunch would now be in full pursuit.

As Dave turned into the finish section with 2 miles to go a timekeeper confirmed that his lead was just over two minutes and Dave could now start to enjoy the final 5 minutes of racing knowing that he was going to claim the win. As Dave crossed the line the gap to the chase ground was 2 minutes, at this level of racing a very significant advantage.

The winner of this event also collects the Derek Witt Memorial Trophy

Dave is now in the unique position of being the reigning LVRC National Cyclocross Champion and now also the LVRC National Road Race champion.
