Grimsby cycling team Flex-tech Ettridge cycles have another prestigious title of National champion to add there increasing list of successes.
Dave Robinson made the trip to Warwickshire last Wednesday to take part in the LVRC National cyclocross championship event. Dave who was hoping to repeat his form wining ride from three weeks ago, at the Midlands distinct championship was up against some of the best riders in the country at this discipline including the 2015 championship winner who was hoping to have a second year of success.
The off-road event held across various obstacles included three climbs with the bike shouldered in very muddy conditions, however the organisers had also included a section of fast motor cycle dirt track and a wood land section to really put the competitors to the test.
The event was run over several laps of this course for 45 minutes and then the bell is rung to indicate only one lap remaining. With a 1.30pm start the overnight frost was still only just releasing its grip and conditions changed every lap as the ground became boggier, making some of the sections of the course extremely slippery for everyone.
Dave’s race started fast with an immediate three man break group starting to pull away from the rest of the field including in this group with Dave was the 2015 winner and the 2015 third place finisher so no one wanted to give up any ground on their competition, by the end of the first lap all three were locked together but as the second lap started one of the leading trio misjudged an obstacle in first of the increasingly slippery sections and took a hard fall leaving Dave and the 2015 winner to duke it out over the remaining 30 minutes, Dave’s road racing strength played a decisive part early on in the second lap as the pair got onto some slightly harder ground Dave was able to put a gap into his chaser, but once the ground became more technical and the riders had to negotiate a ditch Dave made a error getting back onto his bike and his rival was able to get back on terms with him.
Having sensed where his advantage seemed to fall Dave made a more determined effort on the third lap and this time judged the technical section better and started to put some significant distance between himself and the 2015 winner. As the event moved into the final 15 minutes Dave’s high level fitness following a season of cyclocross racing started to make a real difference and the gap to the second-place rider began to extend significantly.
As Dave went across the line to start the final lap his main concerns started to change from who was behind him to not picking a puncture or having any kind of mechanical dilemma over the last 2 miles of the race.
Fortunately, the final lap proved straight forward and Dave cruised over the line unopposed to take the win in doing so he also pick up the coveted LVRC Champions winners jersey and title of LVRC National Champion.
